Arizona could get its seventh Active Management Area (AMA), a region heavily dependent on mined groundwater that is regulated by the state.

Today, the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) announced an official notice to begin the process of considering this designation.

The proposed AMA is located within the boundaries of the Willcox Groundwater Basin, covering parts of Cochise and Graham counties.

Active management practices aim to conserve groundwater supplies within specific areas, for future needs.

Tom Buschatske, director of the ADWR could make the designation if it’s determined that land subsidence or sinking is threatening property or groundwater storage or, if groundwater use is impacting water quality.

A public hearing will be held on Friday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Willcox Community Center to present information and invite comments and evidence regarding the designation.
