The Department of Defense (DOD) has awarded the global metals and mining company South32 $20 million for its Hermosa Project, near the Town of Patagonia.
Under the Defense Production Act Investment Program (DPAI), the funding is intended to accelerate domestic production of manganese.
The DOD states that this investment will enable the company to deliver ore up to two years earlier than originally planned.
South32 will match the funding with approximately $43 million to support access to the manganese deposit.
The manganese deposit is in its pre-feasibility study phase, where ore body sampling is taking place.
This is the latest of 16 awards made by the DPAI program.
