Kristin Harvey - Artist Statement for Sonoran Joy Solo Exhibit
Painting brings me immense joy. Most people who view my work also feel the joy in my art. That brings everything full circle for me and why I often refer to my work as a shared smile. So, the title for my show, “Sonoran Joy” came easily.
This body of work was created in 2023 and 2024. It reflects the culmination of a creative journey I've been on the last year to release my painting process from the self-imposed constraint of past work, to a newfound freedom and energy expressed on the canvas. Previously, I planned each painting and had a clear vision of the outcome prior to starting. I now paint intuitively, with no idea what the outcome will be. Each work is a joyful surprise.
This freedom has allowed me to paint my most authentic work to date. Each piece is an expression of the joy I feel when painting and the love I have of the Sonoran Desert. My passion for the Mexican art and celebration culture drives my palette choices. With colorful piñatas, intricate papel picado and bright lights surrounding you, how can you not feel happy. From Talavera pottery to Oaxaca alebrije, the culture offers an explosion of color.
My hope with this exhibition is that you will leave with a smile on your face and joy in your own heart. - Kristin Harvey
- And, a short piece from Linda D. Addison, a Tucson-based author and poet who has been a 5-time recipient of the Bram Stoker award. "Ghost Riding" is a cautionary tale about driving with no destination in sight...
