A cold-weather system that's traveled much further south than normal is causing people to shiver all over the West. Meteorologist Glenn Lader with the National Weather Service in Tucson says it's a marked contrast with normal mid-May weather.
"The temperatures are quite unusual for this time of year. The average high for today is 93, average low 61, so we're about 25 degrees below normal for the high temperature for this time of the year," Lader said.
Mount Lemmon has seen a light dusting of snow today, and the town of Willcox is under a freeze warning for tonight, with temperatures dipping as low as 31 degrees. Hail has been reported in parts of the Phoenix area.
The weather is expected to return to near-normal by the end of the week.
"Wednesday it looks like highs are only going to be in the 70s once again and then it'll start to warm up a little bit on Thursday, and at least by the weekend high temperatures in Tucson getting back up to about 90 degrees," Lader said.
