HERMOSILLO — Several dozen women marched through Hermosillo’s streets Friday — Mexico’s Mother’s Day — demanding help to find their tesoros, or treasures. That’s how they refer to their missing sons, husbands and other family members.
“We’re not looking for justice, or going around asking who it was,” said Guillermina Giron Quintana, whose son Jose Cristian went missing last August. “The only thing we want is to get them back, to find them.”
A missing or disappeared loved one fills your life with uncertainty, she said.
“You’re always thinking about where they are, what happened to them” she added.
There are roughly 2,200 missing people in Sonora, according to 2018 federal data. A movement of mothers searching for their family members has sprung up in the state. The citizen group recently discovered several dozen bodies in a mass grave.
