Journalists' Roundtable; Helping Migrants and Deportees

Arizona 360 revisits issues shaping 2018.

This week Arizona 360 revisited topics that have continued to capture our attention since our debut six months ago: immigration, education funding, the economy and midterm elections. Four journalists who continue to cover how these issues affect communities across Southern Arizona joined Lorraine Rivera for a roundtable discussion.

Featured in this discussion: Ernesto Portillo, Jr., Editor, La Estrella de Tucson Sarah Garrecht Gassen, Editorial Page Editor, Arizona Daily Star Dan Shearer, Editor, Green Valley News/Sahuarita Sun Dylan Smith, Editor and Publisher, Tucson Sentinel

While the policy and rhetoric surrounding immigration frequently shifts, Joanna Williams's role remains steady. Williams is director of education and advocacy for the Kino Border Initiative, which provides humanitarian aid to deportees and migrants in Nogales, Sonora. Her work takes her across the border each week. In her own words, Williams shared her passion for this cause.

"One of the migrants told me once, he said, 'The eyes they have their time for crying. But eventually the eyes will run out of tears. But our hearts will never stop crying,'" Williams said.
