Visit a place in Tucson that's celebrating fifty years of history, community, and teaching children about stamp collecting.
When you send, or receive mail, do you look at the stamps? Some people do. They look very closely. There's a place in midtown Tucson that's been a resource to stamp collectors and historians alike for fifty years now - The Postal History Foundation.
Our guide to the Foundation was Mr. Paul Nelson. Paul is an avid stamp collector and published author on the subject, who serves as the vice-chair of The Postal History Foundation's board of directors.
Paul says that Arizona postal history has a lot to do with the development of both roads and railroads. One of the factors that pushed Arizona into the Civil War was that the federal government stopping mail delivery to this region when it was confederate territory. The Postal History Foundation's Peggy J. Slusser Memorial Library offers an extensive collection of Civil War books and memorabilia, along with books, catalogs, and periodicals dedicated to the history and science of stamp collecting.
The public is invited to join the Postal History Foundation in marking its fiftieth anniversary on Saturday, October 23, at 12:00 noon with an open house celebration. The Foundation is located at 920 N. First Avenue in Tucson.
