EMERGENCY MINE RESCUE DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE EFFORTS TO SAVE 33 TRAPPED CHILEAN MINERS AIRS OCTOBER 26, 2010 8:00PM ON PBS's NOVA SCIENCE SERIES
The preeminent PBS science series NOVA has teamed up with Pioneer Productions to produce the documentary Emergency Mine Rescue, a one-hour film chronicling the fate of the 33 miners trapped in a collapsed Chilean gold and copper mine in August and the ongoing efforts to save them, NOVA’s senior executive producer Paula S. Apsell and executive producer Howard Swartz announced today.
The special film follows the plight of the 33 men trapped underground and investigates the many challenges faced by the miners and by those working tirelessly around the clock in a desperate bid to bring them safely to the surface.
A NOVA film crew has been on-site at the San José mine in Chile since September 5, just weeks after the collapse and the discovery that nearly three dozen missing miners were still alive. NOVA’s Pioneer Productions crew has gained special access and procured interviews that will give viewers a more detailed account and the scientific perspective inherent in these unfolding events.
In Emergency Mine Rescue, NOVA interviews engineers, NASA experts, medical personnel, key figures from the companies providing drills and crucial rescue equipment, and others. Actual footage from the scene and special animation will be used to demonstrate the extraordinary feats of engineering, along with the biological and geological factors involved in the rescue. The film will also examine the psychological and physiological impact of this kind of prolonged ordeal on the miners and those involved in the rescue efforts.
Emergency Mine Rescue will premiere Tuesday, October 26 at 8pm on PBS-HD
