The 21st Century Cures Act is a wide-ranging bill that covers everything from treating opioid addiction to drug trials and mental health services.
Congresswoman Martha McSally, R-Ariz., added amendments to the bill that include money for local law enforcement agencies to better train officers to deal with mental health emergencies.
“These provisions will also divert low-level offenders from incarceration to treatment programs, help reduce recidivism and provide support to mentally ill offenders re-entering the community,” said McSally on the floor of the U.S. House.
The proposal is the result of a compromise with the U.S. Senate.
