Arizona Democrats hoped to make headway in the state’s Legislature on Election Day, but it now appears they made up little ground.
In the state Senate, Democrats had envisioned a 15-15 partisan split before the election. Instead, the makeup of the chamber is set to maintain a Republican-majority 17-13, as it has been for three of the last four years.
Sen. David Bradley, D-Tucson, said he is optimistic about the 2017 legislative session despite still being in the minority.
“The results of the election have made the Senate somewhat more moderate. The folks that came over from the House, some of them would be classified that way,” said Bradley.
The Arizona House is still in Republican control, though Democrats did pick up nine seats to take the partisan divide to 35-25 with a majority of Republicans.
