Local advocacy group Look! Save a Life launched a public awareness campaign Friday with a simple message: Motorists should focus on driving while behind the wheel, and nothing else.
The group hopes this message will help reduce the number of bicyclists and pedestrians killed on our roads.
"Whether you’re a cyclist or a motorist, safety is everyone’s responsibility," said Brendan Lyons, the group's executive director. "Anyone who uses our public roadways should simply look out for each other. And that does include cyclists as well."
Lyons’ organization teamed up with the Tucson and Oro Valley police departments and the Pima County Sheriff's Department, all of which will cover one of their patrol cars with messages that include:
- A moment’s distraction is a lifetime of regret
- Give three feet to cyclists, it’s the law
- You drive, you text, you pay
Arizona is one of two states in the country where texting and driving remains legal, though both the City of Tucson and Pima County have banned the practice.
