Millions of people across the country will enjoy fireworks displays this week as part of Independence Day celebrations. In southern Arizona, the largest of these events is held at one of the area’s most recognizable landmarks, which owes its existence to a victorious football game more than a century ago. The “A” on Sentinel Peak was constructed after the University of Arizona beat California’s Pomona College on Thanksgiving Day 1914 and again in 1915. Today, the “A” holds a special place for many people- 100 years after its completion.
