The University of Arizona greeted a freshman class of 7,200 for the first day of the fall semester Monday.
The freshman class was smaller than last year's 7,401, because of a decline in high school graduate numbers, UA officials said in a press release. This year's freshman class included 4,300 Arizonans.
The number of international students is also lower because of the UA's English-language proficiency requirement. There are 406 incoming foreign students this year, compared with 508 last year.
UA officials said in the press release that 41.3 percent of the freshmen are minorities, topping 40 percent for the first time.
"In addition, more than 600 former students have re-enrolled to obtain their degrees, and early indicators suggest first-to-second year retention is on the rise for the second consecutive year," the press release said.
