Photographer Alejandra Platt-Torres has lived on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border, and that gives her the unique perspective displayed in her latest exhibit, “A World Separated by Borders.”
The photos, now on exhibit at the Arizona State Museum in Tucson, offer an intimate perspective from a Mexican-born artist who knows both sides of the international line.
“Since I was 7 years old, I’ve been coming to Arizona with my family,” says Platt-Torres, who was born in Hermosillo, Sonora.
Her photographs show this world separated by borders and the experiences of those who are trying to bridge the divide. Platt-Torres says she is acting as a documentarian, but the images reveal the eye of an artist.
Her camera shies away from the faces of the migrants, and in her images one sees the small details that hint at the tales of the migrants. Viewers are asked to imagine the stories that take place in the desert.
"A World Separated by Borders" is presented in collaboration with the University of Arizona's Confluence Center for Creative Inquiry.
