Tax season opens with expanded Direct File tool in Arizona

An expansion of options in the tool now allows more Arizona residents to use it.

The window to file income tax returns opened this week, and the Arizona Department of Revenue is touting an expansion of the IRS' Direct File tool that should make it useful to more taxpayers.

Direct File is available to Arizonans for the second year, though ADOR's Rebecca Wilder said last year was more of a pilot program for the filing tool.

"This year, not only has the program expanded to include more income types, credits and deductions, but the tool is available from Day One. Taxpayers can file their taxes directly with the IRS and the State of Arizona for free," said Wilder.

She said about 1.7 million Arizonans should now be eligible for Direct File.

"If your taxes are a bit more complicated, you may need to seek other avenues of filing. But, for those eligible, direct file can be a really great way to file their taxes for free," she said.

ADOR notes that more complex tax returns can still be filed for free through the Arizona Free Alliance program, which offers free tax preparation software to those who meet certain criteria.

It also provides a list of software providers who are approved to submit electronically filed returns with the state.

ADOR offers the following tips for tax preparation: - Be sure to gather all your forms before beginning to prepare your return.

  • Decide how you’re going to file and do your due diligence in selecting a reputable tax preparer.
  • Choose e-file and direct deposit for your return. It’s easier, more secure and you’ll get your refund much faster.
  • You need to complete your federal return before you can start your Arizona return.
  • Verify you are using the correct tax year form by looking at the upper right corner, ensure all the necessary lines and forms are filled out properly, and double-check the information you entered.
  • If filing a paper return, we recommend you use fillable forms, and print with black ink and on white paper. Fillable forms eliminate the need for ADOR staff to interpret handwriting.
